Work backwards from the target rather than blindly cycling operators. First eyeball the rough size you need: if the target is much bigger than the three numbers added, multiplication has to be involved somewhere, and if it is small or the numbers are close, you are probably looking at subtraction or division. That instinct narrows four-by-four combinations down to one or two worth trying.
Never forget precedence — multiplication and division resolve before addition and subtraction, so "3 + 5 × 2" is 13, not 16. Use that to your advantage: a × tucked in the middle can leap the total far higher than its position suggests. With sixty seconds on the clock, lock in the obvious solutions instantly and only slow down on the genuinely ambiguous ones, since a steady stream of quick equations beats laboring over each.
