Pick 4 colors, then Guess

Codebreaker

Codebreaker

Crack the hidden 4-color code from feedback. Solve as many as you can.

How to play

A secret code of 4 colored pegs is hidden (6 colors available, repeats allowed).

More: full rules and tips

Tap colors from the palette to fill your guess row, then tap GUESS. Tap a peg in your row to remove it; CLEAR empties the row.

After each guess you get feedback pegs: a filled (●) peg means right color in the right spot, a hollow (○) peg means right color in the wrong spot. Their order does not tell you which peg matched.

The guess budget shrinks as your streak grows: 8 guesses for each of your first two codes, 7 for the 3rd and 4th, 6 for the 5th to 7th, 5 for the 8th to 12th, and 4 from the 13th code on. No method can guarantee a code in 4 guesses, so every streak ends sooner or later. Crack a code and a new one appears; run out of guesses and the game ends.

Goal: crack as many codes in a row as you can.

Tips & strategy

Treat your first guess as a probe, not an attempt to win — spend it gathering information rather than hoping. A common opening is two of one colour and two of another, because the feedback instantly tells you how many of those two colours belong in the code, which is far more useful than a lucky scatter of singles.

Read the feedback as a count first, ignoring order: the total pegs tell you how many of your colours are correct, and the filled-versus-hollow split tells you how many are also in the right spot. Change one variable at a time across guesses so each result is unambiguous — swap a single colour and watch whether your filled count rises or falls. As your streak grows the budget shrinks — 8, 7, 6, 5 and finally 4 guesses from the 13th code on — and with only four even perfect play cracks about three codes in five, so that disciplined elimination matters more than ever; a logical deduction beats a hopeful stab every time.
