Haunted Mirrors

Haunted Mirrors

A logic puzzle set in a hall of mirrors. Fill every square of a 5×5 grid with a ghost, a vampire or a zombie so that each number around the edge matches how many monsters that line of sight can see — ghosts only in mirrors, vampires only face to face, zombies always.

How to play

Tap an empty square, then tap 👻, 🧛 or 🧟 below the board to put that monster there. Every square without a mirror holds exactly one monster, and the counters above the board show how many of each kind the puzzle has. Each number around the edge says how many monsters you would see looking into the grid from that spot.

More: full rules and tips

A line of sight runs straight into the grid and turns whenever it hits a mirror, until it leaves the grid again. Squares it passes before the first mirror are seen directly; squares it passes after a mirror are seen in a reflection. A ghost 👻 can only be seen in a reflection, a vampire 🧛 can only be seen directly, and a zombie 🧟 is seen either way. If a line passes the same square twice, that monster is counted twice.

Tap a number to light up its line of sight. Squares seen directly get a solid purple border, squares seen in a reflection get a dashed blue border, and the mirrors on the way are highlighted; tap the number again to hide it. A number turns green and underlined when every square on its line is filled and the count is right, and red and crossed out as soon as the line already sees too many monsters or can no longer reach its number.

Use ✎ Notes to pencil in small candidates instead of a monster, and ⌫ to clear a square. Tapping the monster a square already holds also clears it. A counter above the board turns red if you have placed too many of that kind.

Every puzzle is new, has exactly one solution and can be solved by logic without guessing. The clock starts when you press Start and keeps running even if you switch away; your score is the time it took to solve, and lower is better. Save a good time to the Hall of Fame from the result card.

Tips & strategy

Start with the zeros and the numbers that look too big. A 0 means nothing on that line can be seen: every square it passes directly must hold a ghost, and every square it passes after a mirror must hold a vampire. At the other extreme, when a number equals the number of squares on its line (counting a square twice if the line passes it twice), everything must be visible: no ghosts before the first mirror and no vampires after it.

Look at where a line meets its first mirror. A line that crosses the whole grid without touching a mirror sees nothing in a reflection, so ghosts on it are invisible and its number simply counts the vampires and zombies in that row or column. A line whose very first square is a mirror sees everything in a reflection, so vampires on it vanish and its number counts ghosts and zombies.

Every line of sight comes out somewhere else on the edge, and the number there looks along the same squares from the other end. Squares that one end sees directly, the other end usually sees in a mirror, so a zombie on them counts for both numbers while a ghost or a vampire counts for only one. Comparing the two numbers of the same path tells you a lot; tap them one after the other to see the path from both sides.

Keep an eye on the totals above the board. Late in a puzzle they often settle the last few squares on their own — when all the vampires are placed, every remaining square is a ghost or a zombie. This puzzle type was invented by David Millar as the Haunted Mirror Maze and is also known as Undead from Simon Tatham's puzzle collection. Every grid here is generated fresh and checked to have one solution that can be reached one line of sight at a time.
