Coloured squares flash, vanish, then return — did one of them change? A test of how much you can hold at once.
A handful of coloured squares appears on the grid for a moment, then the whole board goes blank, and then the squares come back. Exactly one square may have changed colour in the gap, or nothing may have changed at all — the two are equally likely.
Tap CHANGED or SAME. There is no clock on your answer, so take the time you need; the difficulty is entirely in the flash, not in the reply. When you get one right the next round tightens: another square is added every three correct answers, the flash gets shorter, and the blank gap gets longer so there is more time for the memory to leak away.
After each answer the square that actually changed is outlined in white for a moment. That is worth watching even when you were right, because it teaches you which positions your eye skips.
Three wrong answers end the run and your score is the number you got right along the way. Pure guessing averages about three points, so anything past ten means you are really holding the colours.
Do not try to look at every square. Above four items the eye cannot scan them one by one inside the flash, and the attempt costs you the ones you would otherwise have kept. Take in the whole grid as a single picture instead — a shape made of colours — and you will notice the change without ever having named the individual squares.
Group the colours rather than listing them. Three squares remembered as "warm cluster on the left, one cold on the right" survives the blank gap far better than three separate facts, and grouping scales where listing does not. The reason the game gets hard is not that the squares get more numerous but that the flash gets shorter, and a single grouped impression takes one glance where a list takes several.
When you genuinely have no idea, answer SAME. Most people encode a subset of the squares and, if the change happened to land in that subset, they see it immediately and confidently. A vague feeling of difference with nothing specific behind it is usually your eye moving, not the board changing. That asymmetry makes SAME the better default, though it is only worth a point or two — it is not a substitute for encoding.
Watch the white outline after each answer, especially the rounds you got right by luck. Almost everyone has systematic blind spots — commonly the bottom row and the far corners — and once you know yours, deliberately starting your glance there costs nothing and recovers several points a run.
